Explore the sanctuary by torchlight as your guide leads you in search of some
of the more distinctive sights and sounds of New Zealand’s native forest.
Experience many of the rare and endangered species and see those which only
come out at night. See unique species such as wētā, glow worms, and tuatara.
Your group may see some of the 150 little spotted kiwi who call Zealandia home
- sightings of kiwi are common on these tours (circa 80%), but are not
guaranteed. Gain insights into New Zealand’s natural history and the
significance of the unique species within Māori culture. The tour will end
with a replenishing cup of hot kawakawa (bushman’s tea) in the Visitors
Centre.

What to bring:
You'll be venturing into the bush so please dress to the conditions.
Wear sturdy walking shoes, warm clothes and bring a waterproof jacket.

You may be lucky to spot a Little Spotted Kiwi on your tour, however, please remember that sightings are not guaranteed.
We ask everyone to conduct a biosecurity check of their bags before entering the sanctuary to ensure that Zealandia stays free from predators and invasive species. Please follow your guide’s instructions during the tour.
Please arrive 10-15 minutes before the tour start time. You might miss your tour if you arrive late. On arrival, check in at the Zealandia Visitor Centre. There will be a sign directing you to the side entrance up the path.
Minimum age on this tour is 12 years. Groups with younger children may be turned away. Minors (under the age of 18 years) must be accompanied by an adult.
This is a 2.5-hour guided outdoor experience, and tours commence in all weather conditions. Please ensure that you (and if others in your party) are suitably dressed for an outdoor night-time walk. A waterproof jacket, plus additional warm layers, are a good option. Umbrellas are not permitted.
Sturdy footwear is essential as the ground is rough and uneven in places. For Health & Safety reasons we may turn away those with unsuitable footwear, e.g. jandals.
Torches (flashlights) are provided. Audio transmitters with earpieces are used on tours, you are welcome to bring your own earpiece to use. If you are hearing impaired and cannot use an earpiece, please speak to your guide before the tour.

Smoking or vaping is not permitted at any time within Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne or the Visitor Centre.
