Having visited an elephant sanctuary in Pattaya back in 2009 (different company altogether) for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, we were a little unsure whether we wanted to visit this Phuket location on the basis of ethics alone, because in Pattaya they were making elephants do tricks and allowed people to ride - which we were not happy about at the time.
In this sanctuary, I’m pleased to say that “ethical” truly means ethical as they are treated and respected so well. The elephants are friendly and you’re not allowed to ride them - which is fantastic. The event itself is well organised and the experience is just right in terms of time. You’re not rushed, everyone is friendly, showers and toilets to wash yourself down are clean. We left on a real high. Food was great too, as was the prompt pickup.
I would say though that on Pelago, it is unclear what time this event is occurring. If it says half-day, what it actually means is mid-day tour lasting 2-3hrs in total - but it’s totally worth it and just the right amount of time needed. We were concerned the event would be too short. It’s not.
Would highly recommend!

We had the best time at the sanctuary. The elephants were treated very well and one baby with its mother and one older elephant lady were excluded from the activity for their own safety. We needed, washed and mudded the elephants and there were lots of people around taking pics. The transport from and back to our hotel was excellent. 10/10 experience. You should definitely bring swimsuits and a towel!
