Day 1: Queenstown to Aoraki/Mount Cook
Our journey commences in the adventure capital of Queenstown, where we'll bid
farewell to the shores of Lake Wakatipu and embark on a scenic drive through
the Otago province. Our first stop is the charming historic gold mining
village of Arrowtown, where you can stroll along the main street, explore the
Chinese settlement, or try your hand at gold panning.
Next, we'll venture through the dramatic Kawarau Gorge, where you'll witness
the birthplace of bungy jumping and marvel at the iconic bungy bridge. As we
continue our journey, the landscape will transform as we ascend the Lindis
Pass, entering the Mackenzie Country and witnessing a breathtaking change in
scenery.
Prepare to be mesmerised by the otherworldly "Clay Cliffs" of Omarama before
arriving at the stunning turquoise glacial lakes of Pukaki and Tekapo. We'll
make scenic stops at each, allowing you to capture the beauty of these natural
wonders and learn about their unique geological formations. Finally, we'll
turn our gaze towards Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, home to New Zealand's
highest peak and a collection of twenty other mountains exceeding 3,000
meters.
Upon arrival at Aoraki/Mount Cook, you'll have the option to embark on guided
walks tailored to your interests and fitness level, immersing yourself in the
alpine grandeur. If time and weather permit, we may even venture to witness
the Tasman Glacier, the longest glacier in a temperate zone—a truly awe-
inspiring sight.
Day 2: Aoraki/Mount Cook to Christchurch
For those seeking an even more exhilarating experience, you can choose to
embark on a scenic flight (optional) that includes a landing on the Tasman
Glacier, offering an unparalleled perspective of this icy giant.
As we bid farewell to Aoraki/Mount Cook, our journey north continues through
the Mackenzie Country, passing by the picturesque Lake Tekapo, where you'll
have another chance to admire the Church of the Good Shepherd. We'll then
descend onto the vast Canterbury Plains, stopping at the charming town of
Geraldine, known for its arts and crafts scene.
