The Mondsee region has been populated at least since the late Neolithic period. The pile dwellings and ceramics found here are so important that the archaeological culture named after them is known all over the world. The pile dwellings in Mondsee, together with over 900 other sites in Austria, Germany, Switzerland and France, form the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Dale dwellings in the Alps”.
For the monastery Mondsee 748 is given as the year of foundation. In 976 St. Wolfgang, who was bishop of Regensburg at that time, probably for political reasons, retired to Mondsee and spent a year here. This period is the origin of the pilgrimage, which began especially in the 15th century and was one of the most important pilgrimages in Europe in the late Middle Ages. It brought prosperity and cultural prosperity to the region. The Gothic winged altar of St. Wolfgang, the masterpiece by Michael Pacher, testifies to this time.
