It forms part of the old royal road and the traditional road of the valleys of Andorra, today converted into an avenue and the country's main commercial axis. Almost all the banks in the country have their headquarters in this commercial area. The avenue bears the name of the patron saint of Andorra, the Virgin of Meritxell, whose sanctuary is located in Meritxell (Canillo).
