Mainland Penang 3

When we talk about exploring Penang, it’s mostly the places on Penang Island that come to mind. But did you know that on the opposite end of the Penang Bridge lies Mainland Penang? This other half of the state is collectively known as Seberang Perai, and it consists of Butterworth and Bukit Mertajam. Here, you’ll find an abundance of under-the-radar gems that are certainly worth exploring — mainly if you want a quieter time with fewer tourist crowds.

That said, we’ve rounded up the best underrated Mainland Penang attractions that remain well-kept secrets among locals!

Bask in idyllic countryside living in Kampung Agong

For those looking for a respite from the frenetic pace of city living, look no further than Kampung Agong. Formerly a coconut plantation, this farm stay is certainly your best bet for a countryside getaway. Think traditional wooden houses surrounded by lush rice fields and coconut trees, inviting you to leave your worries behind. Apart from these, there are also several photo spots like hanging bird nests and a swing — both inspired by the ones in Bali!

Immerse yourself in fascinating works at Butterworth Art Walk

Guess what — George Town isn’t the only place you can visit in Penang for amazing street art. The coastal town of Butterworth also has a spot that features colourful murals and offbeat installations that you can spend all day admiring. Its very own Butterworth Art Walk aims to educate visitors about the mainland’s culture and history. Since it’s one of the more underrated Mainland Penang attractions, there’s a high chance you’ll have the place all to yourself. (Photo ops with less chances of photo bombers? Yes, please.)

Enjoy the view from Guar Petai (Frog Hill)

Despite what its English name might suggest, Guar Petai isn’t actually a hill full of frogs — but an abandoned tin mining site. If hiking is on your list of things to do in Mainland Penang, this hill will introduce you to natural wonders that you probably won’t find elsewhere! The climb only takes about 20 minutes, but it’s quite steep and rather muddy due to its grounds of red clay. Once you reach the top, expect a stunning panorama of lush greenery and multiple turquoise pools that look straight out of a fantasy novel.

Pay a visit to the Nine Emperor Gods Taoist Temple

Here, we have what is arguably the largest temple complex in Butterworth. Dedicated to the Nine Emperor Gods of Taoism, it boasts magnificent ornate architecture and vibrantly hued structures that are truly sights to behold. Many locals would flock here during the Feast of the Nine Emperor Gods, an annual nine-day celebration where devotees partake in certain rituals as a testament to their faith.

Explore the wonders of Bukit Mertajam Recreational Forest

Whether you’re an outdoorsy adventurer or someone who prefers a leisurely stroll, Bukit Mertajam Recreational Forest has something for you. Spanning over 37 hectares of hilly terrain brimming with native trees, streams, and waterfalls, it’s one of the best Mainland Penang attractions for various nature activities; from bird-watching and biking, to camping and hiking. Many locals would come here at dawn to climb Tokun Hill and watch the sunrise. On this peak, you can witness a majestic view of Mengkuang Dam and the surrounding lush forest.

Indeed, there is also a lot to see and experience on the other side of Penang. So, why not start off with these cool things to do in Mainland Penang? There’s no better time than now — especially while they’re still under the tourist radar.
