Matera and its districts of ancient cave dwellings, "Sassi", were declared a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1993 and are now considered one of the main italian attraction.
People have been settling here for a long time: Matera is often cited as one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the world.

We’ll walk up and down the Sasso Caveoso, and we’ll visit Casa Grotta di Vico Solitario, a typical “Sasso” dwelling still furnished as it was in 1953. We’ll visit “Santa Lucia alle Malve”, a. Rupestrian church in good conditions and we’ll stop here and there into the souvenir shops.Matera
