Showa Shinzan is a volcanic lava dome in Hokkaido, Japan. Its name means
"Showa new mountain," as it formed during the Showa period (1926-1989). The
dome originally stood at a height of 270 meters but rose to its current 398
meters after a series of earthquakes and lava broke through the surface. It is
a rare rock tower-type volcano. The ground is reddish-brown in color and you
can see steam rising from the ground.
Around 100 bears live in the Showa Shinzan Bear Ranch, with their areas
divided by the bears' ages. You can buy apples, biscuits, and other snacks at
the entrance to feed the bears with. Those who want to see the bears up close
can also go to the special observation room.
