    During their second day, visitors will experience the ever-present nature of the valley as well as the re-discovered crafts of the region. This will include a river boat ride along the glassy, almost shockingly blue-green surface of the Yoshinogawa River which over millions of years has carved the surrounding Ōboke Gorge, exposing millions of years’ worth of geological beauty. Afterwards, guests will have a chance to experience “akane dyeing,” a special kind of red-dye that was at one time used to impart a rich crimson color enjoyed by nobles at the Imperial Court.

    The day will end with a stroll of the former merchant quarter of Udatsu Town where guests can see traditional architecture as well as merchant manors that were once responsible for the wealth and splendor of the region during much of Japan’s Medieval Era. The evening will be spent in on of these manors which has been skillfully renovated to preserve the traditional feel but accommodate modern comforts.

Lastly, guests will be able to learn about and try “aizome,” the rich indigo dyeing tradition that made Tokushima so wealthy during the Japan’s Medieval Era.
