Booking Your Train Ticket

Before you start your adventure, you'll need to secure your train ticket.

For express night travel from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, choose Train No. 9. You can also choose cheaper and slower sleeper trains from Bangkok to Chiang Mai.

Train No. 7 is a daytime train with 2nd class AC seating only, but it is also the fastest train connecting the two cities. Do note that train journeys start from the newly inaugurated Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal for the Bangkok to Chiang Mai route.

You can either head to Hua Lamphong train station or visit the official SRT website to book the tickets. As for validity, you can purchase the train tickets up to 30 days before the departure date.

Thai trains offer a range of classes to suit different budgets and preferences.

While 2nd Class Sleeper trains from Bangkok To Chiang Mai are more common, only No. 9 and 13 have 1st class carriages.

Train No. 9 - 2nd Class AC Sleeper

The two seats on either side convert into four cosy bunk beds (after 8pm), perfect for a good night's sleep.

Train No. 9 - 1st Class AC Sleeper

Are you looking for a luxury train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai? If so, consider upgrading to First Class.

You will have a private cabin with only two berths, providing more space and solitude. These rooms are equipped with facilities such as Wi-Fi, charging sockets, a washbasin and mirror, and a personal LCD touchscreen for entertainment, food ordering, and displaying the route.

For a group of four people, the cabins have an interconnecting door that can be unlocked if needed.

Provisions and Food on Train No. 9

Although the train staff will provide you with a blanket, the coupe can get chilly during the journey due to the air conditioning.

It's wise to have a light jacket or a shawl handy and wear comfortable clothing to ensure a pleasant train ride.

The staff provides you with a bottle of water to stay hydrated.

As for food, you can bring your own snack if you have specific dietary preferences or want to save money.

But it's difficult to resist the food vendors walking through the train, selling a variety of delicious Thai treats, from savoury meals to sweet delights.

The train also has a diner where passengers can purchase frozen food and drinks, connect to free onboard Wi-Fi, and meet and chill out with other travellers.

This Bangkok To Chiang Mai Train stops at Ayutthaya, Lopburi, Phitsanulok, and Lamphun.
