Once you arrive, you will be taken on a guided tour (every hour between 9am and 4pm) beginning with a multi-sensory 3D movie detailing the site's history, followed by a detailed look at the living museum inside the Great House, stamp collection and exhibitions and surrounding picturesque landscape. There is also a gift shop and restaurant on site. Since its construction more than two centuries ago, Pedro St. James was used in a variety of ways – as a cotton plantation, courthouse, jail, Government Assembly and restaurant – before the Cayman Islands government purchased the property in 1996 and restored it to its 18th-century grandeur.
Today it stands as a dynamic piece of Caymanian heritage. Best known as the “birthplace of democracy in the Cayman Islands,” Pedro St. James was the venue for a meeting on December 5, 1831, it was decided to form the islands' first elected parliament. Later, on May 3, 1835, the proclamation ending slavery in the British Empire was read from the site.
