    Tomonoura (鞆の浦) is a port town at the southern end of Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Situated at a bay facing the Seto Inland Sea, the picturesque port town features an endearing old-fashioned fishing townscape, with a calm and laid-back atmosphere. Tomonoura is part of the Setonaikai National Park. Tomonoura prospered in the olden days of sail boats, when merchant ships traveling along the Seto Inland Sea would dock at its port while waiting for a favorable tide. The town center flourished with the bustling sea activity, leading to thriving industries such as the production of "homeishu", a medicinal liquor of shochu and 16 types of herbs, said to promote longevity.

    Fukuyama Castle was one of the greatest castle from Edo Period, built in 1619 by Katsunari Mizuno the feudal lord of the Bingo District. The two structure of the castle called as Fushimi-yagura and Sujigane-gomon are assigned as important properties of the culture of Japan. There is a small museum located inside the castle , where one can see the belongings and different things of medieval masters, alongside archeological and historical artifacts. Most of the structures of the castle were destroyed during world war II and was rebuilt in 1966.

    Shinshoji Temple (神勝寺, Shinshōji) is a Buddhist temple of the Rinzai Zen school about 15 kilometers southwest of central Fukuyama. Constructed in 1965 by a local industrialist, the temple is built on sprawling, forested grounds with a hill at the back and a pond in front. There is a network of walking trails, and the temple buildings are spread across the grounds. The facilities at Shinshoji Temple are intended to provide visitors a Zen experience through various mediums, including tea houses, meditation classes, a museum gallery dedicated to artwork by Zen master Hakuin, as well as a unique contemporary art installation.

  • Fukuzen-ji Temple

    A must visit place in Fukuyama, Taicho-ro is actually a gathering hall that appends Fukuzen-ji Temple. The Fukuzen-ji Temple is believed to have been built during 950 and Taicho-ro itself was fabricated later in 1690. The reception hall of the Taichoro overlooks the nearby islands and the sea which forms a beautiful scene, and the hall has been assigned as a Japan historic site. This room was utilized as a part of the past as a spot for Korean emissaries to stay, and even the agents adulated the excellent perspective from Taicho-ro. To this date, numerous vacationers still come to visit Taicho-ro to take photos of the fabulous perspective.
