  • Betty's Hope

    30 minsAdmission Ticket Free
This is a sugar plantation site where one of the two sugar mill towers has been fully restored complete with sails. With a small interpretation center and interpretation signage throughout the estate, this heritage landmark is well worth a visit. Betty’s Hope was one of the earliest sugar plantations, dating to 1651. Throughout its 300-year history, Betty’s Hope played a prominent role in Antigua and Barbuda history and influenced the lives of many generations of Antiguans. Today about 112 sugar mill towers still dot the countryside of this independent nation, reminding us of the days of slavery under King Sugar. A map of the remaining mills can be seen at the Interpretation Centre.
  • Devil's Bridge

    45 minsAdmission Ticket Free
Devil’s Bridge, located outside the village of Willikies, offers a stunning glimpse into Antigua’s natural formation. Composed of limestone rock, the rugged terrain of Devil’s Bridge is the result of millions of years of ancient reef formation. For hundreds of thousands of years, the Atlantic’s waves have crashed into the east coast of Antigua creating a natural arch, or bridge. Numerous geysers and blowholes surround the arch as waves continually break against the coastal rocks. The history of Devil’s Bridge is shrouded in tragedy. It’s said to be a place where enslaved Africans would go to commit suicide in a final effort to escape the horrors of slavery. The arch got the name “Devil’s Bridge” because people at the time believed that the devil must live there.
  • St. John's

    45 minsAdmission Ticket Free
The skyline of St. John's, the capital and largest city of Antigua and Barbuda, is dominated by the magnificently evocative white baroque towers of St. John's Cathedral. Built-in 1845, the church is now in its third incarnation, as earthquakes in 1683 and in 1745 destroyed the previous structures. The towers are the first sight of Antigua for about half of the island's visitors each year, many of whom arrive by boat. With its recently completed cruise ship dock and several hotels, St. John's is a lively hub for shopping and dining. There is the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda, housed in the colonial Court House (1750). The museum displays both Arawak and colonial artifacts recovered from archaeological digs on the islands. It also features an Arawak house, models of sugar plantations, etc. On Friday and Saturday mornings, be sure to visit the vibrant farmers market on the southern edge of the city. Folk crafts, colorful tropical fruits, and a buzzing crowd make for a lively morning.
