Highlights
Depending on need, activities can include thatching of traditional Hawaiian hale (grass huts); assisting with clearing, cleaning, planting, and harvesting the kalo (taro) in the taro patches; clearing/rebuilding the 'auwai (freshwater streams) that feed the lo'i (taro patches); or malama of the la'au lapa'au (medicinal plants) that are used to make teas, tinctures, salves, and other medicinal uses.
Guests will also learn about the modern dangers to the ocean ecosystem and Kualoa's efforts to monitor coral in Kaneohe Bay.
Itinerary
Kualoa Ranch
On this immersive volun-tourism eco-tour, guests will learn the importance of caring for the upland 'ahupua'a streams that feed the lo'i down through the valleys and into the ocean. They'll also learn the importance of kalo as sustenance to the Hawaiian people, and how Kualoa is mentioned in the 2,000 year-old Kumulipo genealogical chant as being where the first kalo plant sprung to life.
