I missed my trip

The boat ride was bumpy and lots of people got seasick. Managed to see the tail of the whale and not much from there as the weather was not friendly. Big waves and windy.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month for whale watching in Perth?
The best time to watch whales in Perth is from September to December. During these months, you can join some fantastic whale-watching tours and experience the incredible southern humpback migration. You'll get to see thousands of humpbacks, including mothers with their adorable newborn calves, making their way along the coastline.
Where is the best place for whale watching in Australia?
Some of the best spots for whale watching in Australia are definitely in Western Australia. You can't go wrong with whale-watching tours around Bremer Bay, a short five-hour drive south of Perth, where you can see orcas (which are technically dolphins but more commonly known as killer whales)—it's the only place in Australia with reliable sightings!

Other fantastic locations for whale watching include Rottnest Island and the Margaret River region, which encompasses Geographe Bay and Flinders Bay, where you can catch sight of humpback, southern right, and blue whales from May to December. Plus, don't forget about the Perth Canyon, known for its stunning blue whale gatherings. Whether you're on a ferry or a boat tour, you're in for a memorable whale-watching experience that will linger long in your memory.
How do I prepare for a whale watching trip?
To prepare for whale watching tours, make sure to bring binoculars for a closer view, rubber-soled shoes (avoid heels and leather or plastic soles) for safety on the boat, and a picnic lunch to enjoy during the excursion.

Pack warm clothes or a blanket to stay comfortable, along with sunscreen and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun, and a rain jacket or poncho for wet weather. A camera or video recorder is great for capturing those memorable moments. It's also a good idea to pack a book or playing cards for the trip in or out. If needed, don’t forget your motion sickness medication, and if you’re experiencing morning sickness, consult your doctor first for the best advice.
When can you see humpback whales in Western Australia?
You can see humpback whales in Western Australia during their annual migration from May to December, as they travel from the south-west of Western Australia to the Kimberley. If you're interested in killer whales (orcas), visit Bremer Bay Canyon between January and March to witness the Southern Hemisphere's largest pod.
How many humpback whales are in Western Australia?
Western Australia's humpback whale migration is truly remarkable, with over 45,000 whales joining the journey. If you're interested in seeing these majestic creatures, whale-watching tours are always a great way to experience them during the right season.
Is whale watching better in the morning or afternoon?
Whale watching is generally better in the morning, as many marine species, including whales, are more active during this time. This is when you’re likely to see these gargantuan creatures feeding and engaging in social interactions, which increases your chances of an exciting experience.
When can you see whales in the Margaret River region?
You can catch a glimpse of all sorts of whale species in the Margaret River region from June to November since it becomes a prime spot along the whale migration highway. Just hop on a vessel for an amazing whale-watching experience—you'll not only witness humpback whales but also southern right, minke, and blue whales. It’s definitely an adventure you won’t want to miss!
Is it safe to swim around whales?
While whales may seem friendly, they are still wild animals and can be unpredictable. Tour operators generally say the chance of injury while swimming with whales is very small—almost nonexistent! However, it’s best to admire them from a distance to respect their space and help prevent any stress they might experience.
