It says that the cousin of the Prophet Muhammad, Qusam ibn Abbas, came to Samarkand with a small army to establish Islam. During one of the pagan raids, Kusam ibn Abbas was struck by an arrow, but managed to hide from the eyes of the infidels in the crevice that formed (according to another version, in a well), where he lives to this day.

However, a huge white bird descended from the sky, which destroyed the dam. In commemoration of this event, one of the companions of Kuteiba, Muhammad ibn Vasi, built the Hazret-Khizra mosque on the site of the Zoroastrian temple revered by the Sogdians at the southern tip of Afrasiab at the Iron Gate.
