Shiragawa in Gifu Prefecture has the largest scale of thatched roof houses as World Heritage Site. In Japanese, this kind of house is called “Gassho-zukuri” meaning two hands holding together which resembles the shape of roof fixed merely by rope without a nail. Up to end of Meiji Period, villagers utilized it as workshop to practice silkworm raising, paper and gunpowder making- a single house could hold maximum 30 people to live in. You will have sufficient time of 2 hours strolling and exploring this fairy-tale like area.
