    Only 45kms outside Lhasa, Ganden’s setting high on a ridge overlooking the Kyi Chu Valley is spectacular. After lunch in the monastery restaurant, explore the main chapels, including the vast assembly hall. After (optionally) making the 1½ hour kora(circumambulation route), continue to Lhasa.

    The route to Gyantse crosses 3 big mountain passes: Khamba-la, Karo-la (5045m) and Simi-la. From the Khamba-la drop down to the shores of Yamdrok Tso before climbing again. Head west along the Friendship Highway before turning south and climbing through winding valleys and passes to Rombuk gompa at 5000m. From here the views of Everest are spectacular.
