Giant icicles illuminated in the depth of winter at Hirayu Otaki Ice Festival
One of the three great waterfalls of Hida, Hirayu Otaki, stands 64 meters high and transforms into massive icicles with the arrival of mid-December's deep winter chill. During the Hirayu Otaki Icefall Festival, the icicles are illuminated in shades of green and blue, and fireworks are launched daily throughout the event.
Notes:
The event may be canceled or fireworks delayed due to bad weather.
Photos are of previous events and may differ from the actual experience.
The festival site is about a 20-minute walk from the parking lot; winter boots with good grip are recommended, as icy patches may be slippery.
Nostalgic Japanese landscapes at the UNESCO World Heritage Shirakawa-go village
Shirakawa-go, famous for its gassho-style houses registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a popular tourist destination. In winter, when the gassho-style buildings are blanketed in snow, the grandeur of nature is even more pronounced.
Visitors can explore attractions like the "Triplets Gassho-zukuri" houses and Myōzenji Temple, which has been featured in the New Year's broadcasts, as well as tour the interiors of the gassho houses, offering plenty of highlights to enjoy.
Enjoy the quaint winter scenery of Hida Takayama
The main street, well-known for "food walking" and "townhouse tours," is a must-visit spot in Takayama. In winter, the historic streets are covered in snow, beautifully contrasting with the sturdy townhouse architecture. Warm dishes at local cafes offer a cozy break, allowing you to fully enjoy the winter charm of Hida.

At 2,156 meters, the observation deck at Nishihodaka-guchi Station provides 360° panoramic views recognized with two stars in the Michelin Green Guide Japan.
Winter Wonders: See "frosted trees" and the impressive "snow corridor."
Weather permitting, you might spot "ebi no shippo" (frosted tails) up close!
