Giant icicles illuminated in the depth of winter at Hirayu Otaki Ice Festival

One of the three great waterfalls of Hida, Hirayu Otaki, stands 64 meters high and transforms into massive icicles with the arrival of mid-December's deep winter chill. During the Hirayu Otaki Icefall Festival, the icicles are illuminated in shades of green and blue, and fireworks are launched daily throughout the event.

Notes:

The event may be canceled or fireworks delayed due to bad weather.
Photos are of previous events and may differ from the actual experience.
The festival site is about a 20-minute walk from the parking lot; winter boots with good grip are recommended, as icy patches may be slippery.

Nostalgic Japanese landscapes at the UNESCO World Heritage Shirakawa-go village

Shirakawa-go, famous for its gassho-style houses registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a popular tourist destination. In winter, when the gassho-style buildings are blanketed in snow, the grandeur of nature is even more pronounced.
Visitors can explore attractions like the "Triplets Gassho-zukuri" houses and Myōzenji Temple, which has been featured in the New Year's broadcasts, as well as tour the interiors of the gassho houses, offering plenty of highlights to enjoy.

Enjoy the quaint winter scenery of Hida Takayama

The main street, well-known for "food walking" and "townhouse tours," is a must-visit spot in Takayama. In winter, the historic streets are covered in snow, beautifully contrasting with the sturdy townhouse architecture. Warm dishes at local cafes offer a cozy break, allowing you to fully enjoy the winter charm of Hida.

Reach a snowy paradise at 2,156m with the double-decker Shin-Hotaka Ropeway

Riding Japan's only double-decker gondola offers stunning views above 2,000 meters, perfect for all ages. Experience the breathtaking beauty of the Northern Alps and the world above the clouds.

At 2,156 meters, the observation deck at Nishihodaka-guchi Station provides 360° panoramic views recognized with two stars in the Michelin Green Guide Japan.

Winter Wonders: See "frosted trees" and the impressive "snow corridor."

Weather permitting, you might spot "ebi no shippo" (frosted tails) up close!

Fairy-Tale Experience: The Sengen Park snow corridor features walls of snow that rise up to 3 meters, creating a magical 240-meter-long passage.
Please note that visibility of frosted trees, the snow corridor, and snowy landscapes may vary due to weather conditions.

Stay at a 5-star Oku-Hida onsen resort, soaking in nine different open-air hot springs

Our proud onsen features natural flowing spring water! The garden open-air bath, "Uguisu no Yu," boasts a mystical emerald color and is renowned as a beauty bath rich in vitamins and minerals. With various uniquely designed hot springs, you can enjoy a delightful experience without getting bored.
Please note that only the open-air baths use natural spring water; indoor baths are heated.

★ The "Snow Fireflies" event is held on the hotel grounds, offering a fantastical world illuminated by sculptures made of snow and ice.
★ The Okuhida Garden Hotel Yake-dake has been recognized as a "5-Star Inn" in 2023 by travel professionals selected by the Tourism Economic Newspaper.

Located in Okuhida Onsen-go, Shin-Hirayu Onsen, this ryokan offers a delightful stay with nine types of open-air baths featuring 100% natural spring water, including the garden open-air bath "Uguisu no Yu." Enjoy a traditional kaiseki dinner cooked over an irori (hearth).
Meals: Dinner: Japanese kaiseki, Breakfast: Japanese set meal
Please note that we cannot accommodate wheat allergies.

Room Type: No specific room assigned (either Japanese-style or Western-style; details provided on the day). All rooms are non-smoking and equipped with a private bath and toilet. The large bath is separated into male, female, and mixed bathing areas; "Uguisu no Yu" is a mixed bath, and bathing attire is provided. The mixed bath is women-only from 10 PM to 6 AM.
