Visitors to Tasmania may have heard of Wineglass Bay, Bruny Island or Cradle
Mountain, but few have ever been to Maria Island in the Tasman Sea in
southeastern Tasmania. The island has a total area of about 115.5 square
kilometers. There are no permanent residents, no vehicles, no noise, and no
pollution on the island, making it very suitable for hiking, cycling, and
leisure sightseeing. The permanent residents here are wild animals, such as
wombats, kangaroos, and Australian grey geese.

Hiking Tips

  • Bring all your food and water with you, as these are not available on the island.
  • Always wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots when hiking.
  • Bring a raincoat to protect against wind and rain.
  • Bring a sun hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, insect repellent, and first aid supplies.

Protecting the environment

  • Plan ahead and prepare early: walk in small groups; pack leftover food and water to minimize waste.
  • Walking, Camping, and Biking on Hard Rock Surfaces: Stay on established trails; use specially marked campsites.
  • Protect wildlife: Wombats are popular with everyone, but please view them from a safe distance. Never touch, feed, chase or catch any wild animals. This can make them sick, and they can bite!
  • Dispose of waste properly: bring your belongings in and take your trash out without leaving any traces. There are no trash cans on the island, so please take your trash with you. When you need to use the toilet, please use a nearby toilet. If you cannot find a toilet, please bury all fecal excrement and toilet paper in a hole 15-20 cm deep at least 100 meters away from water sources, campsites and trails. After burying, cover and hide the hole.
  • Don’t move what you find: Don’t move rocks, plants and other natural objects when you find them. Respect Aboriginal sites and other culturally significant places.
  • Using fuel stoves: Seasonal campfire restrictions apply throughout the national parks, so follow signs. Even during campfire season, use campfires only in permitted fire areas in the park.
  • Be considerate of others: Respect other tourists and think about their travel experience. Do not fly drones without permission.
