The neighborhood of Ingleses was part of the Parish of São João Batista do Rio Vermelho, founded in 1831, and the name of the beach is due to an English ship that ran aground there. The lagoon was one of the most important colonial centers on the island of Santa Catarina, together with Santo Antônio de Lisboa and Ribeiro on the island. The occupation starts from the village of Nossa Senhora do Desterro.
