At the top there was a temple and a statue of an idol of great proportions; now there is only a square platform with a somewhat irregular surface. Its nucleus is made of adobe and in the past, it was all covered with paintings on stucco. Due to its location, it closes the Calzada de los Muertos in one of the axes.2 Pyramid of the Sun (aerial view) In 1971, further excavations and surveys uncovered a grotto below the pyramid. In this grotto there are four doors, arranged like the petals of a flower, through which you can access as many other rooms. The grotto is reached through a 7 m long well at the foot of the pyramid's steps.
