The club culture has a special status in Berlin and is certainly unique in this form worldwide. The fall of the wall favored the creation of these places. Many new open spaces in the middle of Berlin made it possible to experiment without high fixed costs.
These places have an important cultural function. They create safe spaces for their visitors, are constantly changing and maintain a close relationship with the art scene. There is even an influence on urban development, for example with the project on the Holzmarkt.
And politics is slowly discovering that, in addition to the cultural factors, the clubs are also an immense economic factor in the city, with a turnover of around 1.5 billion euros a year.
We want to go on a search for clues and see why the club scene is so important for the city and how it can be protected in the future.
