Valcamonica creeps between the Adamello Group and the eastern Orobie Alps, with 120 thousand inhabitants spread along the nearly 100 kilometers of the valley, from the Tonale Pass to the north, to Pisogne, on the Iseo lake to the south. Inhabited for over 10,000 years, as evidenced by the highest concentration of rock engravings in Europe, it is rich in works of art from all eras with numerous churches, castles, ancient villages and stately palaces witnessing an era in which, thanks to trade and production for the Venetian Republic, this valley was flourishing and rich.

The signs and representations that for thousands of years have been engraved on the rocks of Valcamonica by the Camunni and their ancestors, constitute the immense cultural treasure that UNESCO has declared, since the seventies, a World Heritage Site: the first Italy. The inhabitants of the valley, with domestic affection, have always called "pitoti" (puppets) the figures left in view. It is the most important complex of rock carvings ever found in the world in terms of quantity of figures and temporal continuity. The 300,000 enigmatic images scattered along the valley depict weapons and warriors, hunting scenes, religious rites, new inventions and technologies (such as the chariot and metal forging), symbols and abstractions. They tell in a great stone book the evolution of European society and mentality in the pre and protohistoric ages.
