    Visit the Legendary Borobudur Temple

The Borobudur Temple in Central Java Province in Indonesia is one of the world's most iconic and historical Buddhist monuments.

Set against a backdrop of lush landscapes, the ancient temple complex dates back to the 8th century and showcases intricate stone carvings and stupas.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a must-visit destination and can be explored in different settings.

Let's delve deeper into how you can make the most of your experience at Borobudur Temple as we dive into its history and all the essential information you need to know before planning your visit.

    History of Borobudur Temple

Borobudur Temple was constructed during the reign of the Sailendra dynasty in Central Java between 780 to 840 AD.

Representing the philosophy of Buddhist teachings, the temple was built in five stages like a stepped pyramid.

It served as a pilgrimage spot for many years where travellers visited to worship Buddha in Borobudur and gain knowledge of enlightenment.

Between 928 and 1006 AD, when King Mpu Sindok moved his capital to East Java due to volcanic eruption, the temple complex was abandoned as it got buried under layers of soil and volcanic ash.

Later, when the Islamic kingdom entered the country in the 15th century, the temple was forgotten entirely.

In 1814 AD, during British rule, the temple was rediscovered by Thomas Stamford Raffles - yes, that Stamford Raffles, who was the founding father of Singapore and had a keen interest in Javanese history and culture.

After years of excavation, research and restoration processes carried out by different governments, archaeologists and temple collectors, the temple complex was finally renovated between 1975 and 1982 by the Indonesian government with the support of UNESCO.

In 1991, UNESCO declared it a World Heritage site; since then, Borobudur Temple has attracted visitors worldwide.

    The Philosophy of Borobudur Temple

The structure of the Borobudur Temple is like a mandala, symbolising the universal meaning of attaining nirvana.

The 10 levels of the building are built in terraces and divided into three levels.

Each level has a meaning based on Buddhist philosophy.

    1. Kamadhatu is the bottom level showcasing human behaviour bound by worldly desires.

    2. Rupadhatu is the middle level showcasing human behaviour at the start of the shedding of worldly desires

    3. Arupadhatu is the top level showcasing human behaviour completely free of worldly desires.
