Highlights

At Howlanders, we know that visiting the Uyuni Salt Flat from San Pedro is a tour that offers incredible landscapes.

This is a classic four-day tour departing and returning to San Pedro de Atacama. Destinations include the Altiplanic Lagoons, the Siloli Desert, the Polques Hot Springs, and last but not least the Uyuni Salt Flat, where you’ll spend the entire morning.

The tour offers two lodging options:

Shared room: for the first night and third night of the tour. The second night you’ll be staying in a private room at the Salt Hostel. Yes, you read that right :)

Private room: each night you’ll stay in a private room.

We have all read unfortunate experiences of other travelers, and we know how difficult it can be to find quality service. Well, you’ve found it!
With us, you can rest assured knowing that we only work with the best drivers, guides, and accommodations to give you a trip with quality experiences.

Itinerary

San Pedro de Atacama - Green and Red Lagoons - Villa Mar
  • San Pedro de Atacama

    Admission Ticket Free
Upon confirmation of the tour, Howlanders will send you the guide's contact information to coordinate the pick-up. The guide will pick you up at your accommodations in San Pedro de Atacama at 7:00 AM. Once all your fellow travelers are picked up you will board the shuttle bus that will take you to the Bolivian border, where you’ll get your passports stamped and enter a seven-seater 4x4 to start your adventure.
  • Salvador Dali Desert

    3 hoursAdmission Ticket Not Included
Across the border lies the Eduardo Avaroa National Andean Fauna Reserve, where you’ll spend most of the day. Your first stops will be the White Lagoon and Green Lagoon, located at the foot of the Licancabur Volcano. As you continue you’ll see the incredible Andean landscape best exemplified by the Salvador Dali Desert, a large plateau surrounded by imposing mountains.
  • Aguas Termales de Polques

    2 hoursAdmission Ticket Free
The road continues to the Polque Hot Springs. Slip into something more appropriate before sinking into a bath of natural thermal water ( it contrasts nicely with the cold weather). The real challenge is to get out of these hot springs!
  • Geiser Sol de la Manana

    2 hoursAdmission Ticket Included
The Sol de La Mañana Geyser Field awaits you after enjoying lunch with views of the landscape around the hot springs! Full of fumaroles and small geysers, this site creates a unique landscape that allows you to feel the power of nature.
  • Laguna Colorada

    2 hoursAdmission Ticket Free
Finally, you’ll arrive at the Red Lagoon, one of the most spectacular sites of the Altiplano and undoubtedly, the most photographed of the itinerary. You’ll take a short walk along the edge to explore this place, where three different species of flamingos nest. Then, you’ll head to Villa Mar, where you’ll be served dinner and spend the night in your room.

After breakfast, you will visit Lost Italy, natural geological formations reminiscent of the desert landscapes of old Western films. Just next door is the Valley of Rocks, a plain full of eroded volcanic rocks that have created shapes known as the World Cup or the Camel, where you will spend some time taking fun pictures.

  • Uyuni

    2 minsAdmission Ticket Free
The Anaconda Canyon offers panoramic views of the meandering river situated at the bottom of the canyon. From natural viewpoints appreciate the immensity of this site. In the final stretch of the day, you’ll make one more stop at the Sora Wetland, a choice home for many birds and camelids and also chock full of flora endemic to the Altiplano. We particularly like this place because it contrasts with the other slightly more arid areas and lets you see the diversity of the Bolivian Altiplano.
  • Colcha K

    2 hoursAdmission Ticket Free
On the return trip to your accommodations, you’ll stop at a small village that has a shop where you can sample local beers (yes, craft beers from the Bolivian Altiplano). you may also connect to their Wi-Fi. Finally, at sunset, you will head to the best salt hotel in the area, where you’ll dine with views of the altiplano and rest in private rooms built entirely of salt.

Day three is an early start! Wrap up to stay warm because, at 5:00 AM, you’ll set off for the Uyuni Salt Flats. When you arrive, you will be waiting with the whole group to experience one of the most magical sunrises in the world. Take out your camera to capture the special moment.
  • Isla Incahuasi

    2 hoursAdmission Ticket Free
The next stop is Incahuasi Island. Housing a unique ecosystem full of giant cacti and thanks to its elevation, it is one of the best places to enjoy another perspective of the Uyuni Salt Flats and take more pictures. You’ll eat breakfast on the island, (we promise it’ll be one of the best breakfasts with the best views you have ever experienced). Now, it’s time to head to the next stop: a photo session in the Uyuni Salt Flats.
  • Colchani

    1 hoursAdmission Ticket Free
You have already seen a good part of the Uyuni Salt Flats and now it is time to take some pictures. In the rainy season (January-March) you will head to the flooded salt flat to experience the surreal mirror effect. If you’re visiting during the dry season, you will be at the center of the salt flat to take some cool pictures, (you’ll be amazed by the driver's photo skills!)
  • Dakar Monument

    2 hoursAdmission Ticket Free
The last stops in the salt flat are the Dakar Sculpture and the famous Island of Flags. Finally, you’ll finish up a long morning in the salt flat and head to Colchani to visit the local artisan shops, where travelers take the opportunity to pick up a souvenir for this adventure.
  • Train Cemetery

    3 hoursAdmission Ticket Free
After two days of lunching in a "portable restaurant" provided by your multitalented driver, today is the day you get to enjoy a sit-down restaurant! Colchani hosts great restaurants and it’s time to take advantage of them. Following lunch, you’ll head to the outskirts of Uyuni, to view the train cemetery, a landscape formed by the remains of what was once a symbol of Bolivian development. After the visit, you will head back to Villa Mar (the accommodation where you have already spent the first night).
