The Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum in Melaka offers a captivating glimpse into
the lives and culture of the Peranakan Chinese community—descendants of
Chinese traders who intermarried with local Malay and Indonesian women. This
rich heritage blends Chinese traditions with Malay customs, reflecting the
unique cultural fusion of the region.

Located at 48-50 Jalan Tun Cheng Lock, the beautifully restored museum
consists of three interconnected townhouses built in 1896. Designed in a
Chinese-Palladian style, the residence features exquisite hand-painted tiles,
intricately carved teakwood doors, and ornate furnishings, recreating a 19th-
century Baba-Nyonya home.

The museum’s history dates back to its construction by the Chan family, who
have owned it for seven generations. Visitors can explore its carefully
preserved interiors, where social gatherings, traditions, and daily life once
unfolded. Decorative partitions and secure doorways evoke an era of elegance
and privacy, immersing guests in the Peranakan way of life.

Recognized as part of Melaka's UNESCO World Heritage designation in 2008, the
