Located near the city of Anuradhapura, Mihintale holds great importance in Buddhist tradition as the place where Buddhism was first introduced to Sri Lanka.According to legend, in the 3rd century BCE, the Indian Emperor Ashoka's son, Mahinda, arrived in Mihintale and met King Devanampiya Tissa of Sri Lanka. Mahinda, who was a Buddhist monk, converted the king to Buddhism, thereby establishing Buddhism as the state religion of Sri Lanka.Mihintale is home to several ancient structures and monastic complexes, including stupas, caves, and ponds.
