Highlights

This tour will take you through the historical heart of Delft with an enthusiastic local as your guide, whose passion for the city is infectious. Experience the beauty of the historic Market Square, the tranquility of the churches and canals and the excitement of the city's young population.

The guide will regale you with stories that breathe life into Delft's history and culture. In Delft, everything comes together: you will walk in the footsteps of the Father of the Fatherland, get to know the Dutchman who discovered microbes, and of course you'll learn about the master of light himself, Johannes Vermeer. All while walking along the canals of the quaintest city of Holland.

Expect to hear interesting stories and to get real insider tips that only locals know about! You will see and understand things that would otherwise go unnoticed.

This tour takes 2 hours and it starts and ends in the city center. It can be booked in English, German, Dutch, Spanish, Italian or French.

Itinerary

  • Nieuwe Kerk

    10 minsAdmission Ticket Free
I will meet you here on one of the oldest market squares still in use today, next to the statue of Hugo Grotius. We will also end the tour here. The Dutch royal family is burried in this church (as is Hugo). It is the second tallest church of the country. You'll learn more about it!
  • Stadhuis van Delft (City Hall Delft)

    10 minsAdmission Ticket Free
The old town hall of Delft is one of the most important historical buildings of the city. We will walk by it as we leave the Markt square on our way to the Old Church. What is so interesting about the town hall? I'll tell you!
  • Old Church

    30 minsAdmission Ticket Free
After leaving the market square and passing by the butter house, the weighing house and Anthony van Leeuwenhoek's old house, we will go to the old beer brewing quarter and see the Old Church, the leaning tower of Delft. Johannes Vermeer is buried there. But why is it leaning? We'll find out
  • Museum Prinsenhof Delft

    10 minsAdmission Ticket Free
Opposite of the Old Church is the Prinsenhof, a former monastery. This place has played a deciding role in Dutch history, as our Father of the Fatherland has been assassinated here. Let's find out more about it.
  • Gemeenlandshuis van Delfland

    10 minsAdmission Ticket Free
On our way down the Oude Delft canal, we will see the oldest house of Delft. It now has a heavily decorated facade, as it houses the Water Board since 1645. What is this and why was (and is) it so important?
  • Armamentarium

    25 minsAdmission Ticket Free
As we walk further south, having walked by many impressive houses on the Oude Delft canal, we will find a large state weapons Armory, and the main building of the Delft department of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Let's find out more about Delft's role in the golden days of the Dutch Republic. Also around here, we can take a look at the exact spot where Vermeer was standing when he made his painting 'View of Delft'.
  • Vrienden van de Synagoge Delft

    10 minsAdmission Ticket Free
As we walk up north again, along Delft's second oldest canal and former grain market, we will pass by the old synagogue of the city.
  • Beestenmarkt

    10 minsAdmission Ticket Free
Your last stop is the Beestenmarkt (a former animal's market), next to the Markt square (where we started). This is a picturesque place, often crowded with people. If you want to, I will give you some tips on where to get the best beer/snacks/dinner! Enjoy the rest of your stay.
