Highlights

Stevns Klint is not just a treasure trove of geological history; it's also a haven for nature lovers. The cliff's diverse habitats support a variety of plant and animal species, from wildflower meadows to rocky shores teeming with marine life.

Høgerup Church: A Symbol of Resilience:
As you explore the area, be sure to pause at Højerup Church, a poignant reminder of the power of nature and the human spirit.

Viking Kings Hall:
On a beautiful hill, the Land of Legends has remade the largest King’s Hall that we know of from the Viking Age in Denmark. The original archaeological finds that the King’s Hall build on are to be found less than 3 kilometers from the Land of Legends, on a field in the village of Gl. Lejre. Here, archaeologists have been busy excavating the traces of an impressive building, which spreads through the Iron Age and into the Viking Age.

Itinerary

Højerup Old church was built in the 13th century and was originally located at a safe distance from the cliff. However, the sea has been eroding the cliff for centuries, and in 1928, the choir of the church collapsed into the sea. The remaining nave of the church is still standing, and it is a popular tourist destination. The church is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it is considered to be one of the most important examples of coastal erosion in the world. There is a legend that the church moves a cock's stride inland every Christmas Eve. This is said to be a way for the church to avoid being swallowed up by the sea. The church is also mentioned in the Danish play "Elverhøj" by J.L. Heiberg. In the play, the church is used as a symbol of the Danish people's struggle against the sea.

In 2009, traces of the largest viking habitation in Denmark peaked out from the mud. With a little more than 60 meters from one end to the other, it’s about as long as a football field is wide, and with its rows of big, large posts, the construction has been able to support a building with up to 10 meters o the ceiling. With over 600 m2, the large King’s Hall is a unique witness of the culmination of Nordic architecture and crafts of the Viking Age.
