    The Romanian Orthodox Patriarchal Cathedral dates back from the 17th century and it is situated on a small hill, named the Mitropoly Hill, in the heart of Bucharest, very close to Unirii Square (Piata Unirii). Besides being a national symbol of the Orthodox faith, the Patriarchal Church has also a big historical importance. On the Mitropoly Hill, major historical events had place, as, for example, The Unification of the Romanian Principalities of Wallachia and Moldova, voted on 24th of January 1859, by the Elective Assembly and the proclamation of the Independence of the country, in 1878 and of the Kingdom, three years later.
