architecture. Don't miss the annual Flower Festival, where Omuro cherry
blossoms enchant visitors. Immerse yourself in centuries of history and
natural beauty at this World Heritage Site.
Experience the vibrant colors of spring at Ninna-ji, as cherished trees and
bushes bloom in a breathtaking display. The annual Ninna-ji Flower Festival,
typically held from mid-March to early May, celebrates the enchanting Omuro
Sakura. These cherry trees deliberately kept low for aesthetic appeal, feature
large flowers with a sweet fragrance. Delight in the various varieties,
including the popular Omuro Ariake with its cloud-like white blossoms.
Discover the renowned Omuro Sakura, celebrated since the Edo period
(1603–1868) when Ninna-ji welcomed the public for cherry blossom viewing
(hanami). These cherry blossoms still draw crowds each spring, reaching full
bloom in mid-April alongside azaleas painting the scenery in shades of pink
and light purple. As the festival nears its end, maple trees offer a vibrant
green backdrop to the floral spectacle.
