Want to experience the unspoiled wilderness of Banff on horseback, but don’t have a lot of time to do it in? This 2-day overnight trip is perfect for you. Meander along a trail that takes you to the tranquil Bow River. Relax and enjoy a cowboy coffee by campfire along the way before arriving at Sundance Lodge, secluded but just 16 kilometres (10 miles) from town. At night, relax on the porch or linger near the crackling fireplace and watch the starry night. This trip is perfect for all ages, families or groups of friends because anyone can do it. Plus, the journey overall is surprisingly comfortable.


Please note that this trip departs on Saturdays, from May to October.

Itinerary

  • Sundance Lodge

    On this adventure you’ll spend a night at Sundance Lodge - a wonderfully luxurious backcountry haven. Your days will be spent exploring on horseback and your evening relaxing in the cosy lodge, sharing a delicious hearty meal and great conversation with your fellow riders. Day 1: Backcountry Ride to Sundance Lodge Begin your journey at 9:30am at BTR Stables (you can park your vehicle here for free during the trip) and meet the horse specifically picked just for you. Saddled up and ready to ride, you'll follow the ten mile trail along glacier-fed creeks stopping for a simple, hearty cowboy-style hot lunch on the banks of the river.You’ll arrive at Sundance Lodge late afternoon, There are no sleeping bags or camp stoves here, you will be sipping from wine glasses, dining on food prepared by a skilled cook in a professional kitchen and sleeping on a soft bed. Day 2: Return to BTR Stables You’ll have the entire morning to wake up slowly and savour your time at this picturesque lodge. You will begin our ride back to Banff in the late morning with another leisurely lunch stop along the way. You’ll return to BTR Stables at around 4:30 pm, with plenty of stories to tell.

Minimum age is 9 years. Please note that children will not be paired with an adult – they must ride their own horse.
Maximum weight is 230lbs.
Adult pricing applies to all riders.
For safety purposes helmets are mandatory to be worn by all backcountry riders under 18 years of age.
Children aged 17 years and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Adults must sign a waiver for all activities, and a waiver must also be completed by the parent or legal guardian of any person under the age of 18 (documentation may be required to confirm the signatory’s authority).
Minimum drinking age is 18 years.
Our establishment is located in a remote backcountry area. Due to our unique location, our kitchen operates with limited resources. We are unable to accommodate requests beyond our set menus. Menu Options: Backcountry Deluxe Menu, Vegetarian Menu, Vegan Menu (additional cost), Gluten Free Menu (additional cost)

There is no electricity, cell service or internet/wifi.
All passenger heights, weights, ages, dietary requirements and riding abilities must be advised at time of booking.
An understanding of basic English is required so that you can understand simple instructions from the guides.
Riders must be physically capable of controlling the horse during the ride without assistance and for the health and safety of all riders we regrettably cannot accommodate any disabilities or special needs riders. We recognize that disabled riding is a unique and respected skill set that we at the barns do not have the appropriate equipment or skills to safely execute.
