Sandakan Memorial Park
This site commemorates a tragedy and atrocity which struck Sandakan between
January and August 1945. The Memorial Park witnessed the death of
approximately 2400 Australian and British prisoners of war held by the
Japanese in the Sandakan POW camp, within the sight of Allied victory in the
Pacific war.
Puu Jih Shih Buddhist
Be amazed with the interior of the temple which has a combination of red, gold
and blue colours with different forms of gilt Buddhas, illuminated statues and
pillars interwoven with writhing dragons. When you visit the Puu Jih Shih
Temple, you can witness ringing bells, large drum beatings, chanting monks,
and an ethereal setting as the sun sets.
Agnes Keith Museum
This house was rebuilt in 1946/47 and was the first government permanent
timber dwelling to be built after the 2nd World War. The Agnes Keith house is
furnished simply with reproduction of colonial furniture and genuine antiques.
A gallery on first floor tells the story of this remarkable woman, her books
and family. A Keith Time-line starts in 1873 and ends in 2004 tracing the past
to the present Keith generation. War artefacts are also displayed.
Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Center
The Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre (SOURC) was established in 1964
to rehabilitate orphaned orangutans. It has since grown from having just an
outdoor platform to having an Outdoor Nursery viewing area. It is located
within the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve, making the area suitable for
trekking and birding.
Borneo Sunbear Conservation Center
The Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) is a sun bear rescue and
rehabilitation facility being developed in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. Sun bears
are the smallest bears in the world and are only found in Southeast Asia.
These bears continue to be threatened by forest degradation, illegal hunting
for bear parts and poaching to obtain young cubs for pet trade. The results of
these threats has caused young sun bears found to be living in unnatural
captive conditions in Sabah, with no access to outdoor areas.
Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey
The mangroves of Labuk Bay are home to more than just the proboscis monkeys!
Silvered leaf monkeys, otters, slow lorises, and hornbills are just some of
the many species you can spot on a day at the sanctuary.
Rainforest Discovery Center
The Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC) is the gateway to getting to know the
uniqueness and importance of Borneo’s rainforests. The main highlight of this
green place is of course its skywalk with an extensive lenght of 620 meters,
the longest in Sabah.
