It was built on the site of an earlier temple commissioned by Marcus Agrippa during the reign of Augustus (27 BC – AD 14), then after that burnt down, the present building was ordered by the emperor Hadrian and probably dedicated c. AD 126.     It was built in the Campus Martius between 85-86 A.D. by Domitian, both to offer the people an additional place of celebration (and praise of the emperor), and to satisfy the imperial passion for athletics. The stadium had an elongated rectilinear shape with one of the short sides semicircular, it was 276 meters long and 106 meters wide; The arena had the dimensions of 193 x 54 meters and differs from the circus mainly for its smaller size and for the absence of the spina, the obelisk and the carceres and had a capacity of about 30,000 spectators. Its shape was inspired by the stadiums of Olympia and Athens and was built for the Greek athletic games, much appreciated by the emperor, who hoped to involve the Romans in practicing more athletics.
